Making people and ideas findable

I've been wrestling over the definition of the word: blog.
I would like to get an opinion.

I am mostly looking for personal opinions on the definition.

What does everyone think?

I think it's a shortened version of the word "web log." (Everyone else thinks that too.)

Of course that's not what you were looking for, but I wanted to be the first one to say it.

Thanks for the comment. How about your personal definition of blog?

I define it by how I use it. It's a personal publication venue. I use it to publish my thoughts, articles, and columns. It's an outlet for my writing, and a great way to publicize myself.

So it's:
- a creative outlet.
- a publishing house.
- a journal.
- a marketing/PR tool.

I would change journal to a "digital diary" and add,
"an Internet platform that allows conversations not restricted by space or time."

Other than that, Erik nailed it, IMHO.

Originates from Web Log.
Condensed to create bLog.

Traditionally used as an online diary for personal recording of events.
New uses are for self promotion and business promotion.

I think blogging has long moved beyond the formal definition of personal journaling into personal publication.

I define it by how I use it, which is as a record of family moments, things of academic interest, practice for professional design critique, communication of news relevant to my social network, a cognitive dump to clear head and browser, and a central online identity.

While blogging is also about developing community, my use of blogs puts community and conversation as more of an incidental effect. It isn't the most effective two-way communication channel, so I don't worry much whether it is used in that way.

Why are you wrestling over the definition of "blog"? Is it a hangover of Olympics hysteria that you are wrestling with a word?

A blog is a self-defining nondescript communication manifestation of the iconic techno-class.

I don't blog and there are only a few I like - namely friends who are good at putting family narratives or travels on the web. One musician I know who does this well is Roger McGuinn (The Byrds)http://rogermcguinn.blogspot.com/. He and his wife write this. It is very interesting.

My definition - A public Internet diary.
