Event Description

A documentary on the history of Sturgis, South Dakota

Thursday, Oct. 15, 7pm
FREE!!

Earth House Collective
237 N. East St.
Indianapolis, IN 46204

"History Channel fans take note: This documentary about Sturgis, South Dakota (as if there were any other) is for you. It delves into the town’s important geographical location, its history (and what a rich history it is), economics and the bike rally that made the city a household name."
--Film Threat, Truth in Entertainment

Come see the Indiana-produced documentary about the history and economy of Sturgis, South Dakota. Indianapolis-based filmmaker Martin Schliessmann will be present for showing and discussion afterwards. DVDs available for purchase.

“Why Sturgis?” offers an entertaining and informative overview of the famous Sturgis Rally, and much more. Historians, motorcyclists and travel buffs will find fascinating a detailed history of the town and surrounding communities, ties to the National Anthem and an overview of South Dakota tourism – all covered within the film’s 89-minute running time.

A major part of the movie includes the first biography of town's namesake Col. Samuel D. Sturgis (a Civil War General and full Colonel of the 7th Cavalry at the time of Little Bighorn). Most people know of Lt. Col. George Armstrong Custer, but did you know Sturgis was his boss?

Interviews include: Mayor of Sturgis; South Dakota Tourism Director; Fort Meade Museum historian/curator; former Sturgis sculptor; Jackpine Gypsies Motorcycle Club member; bikers; tourists; merchants and more. The heart of the documentary includes one of the last interviews with the late Pearl Hoel: known as “The First Lady of Sturgis” and rally co-founder in 1938.

“This well-written feature length documentary presents an in-depth and fascinating look at the Black Hills community."
-- Robb Report MotorCycling

"It's roughly one-third history, one-third economy and tourism profile, and one-third rally documentary, but at its heart is that unique, rumbling and roaring gathering."
--South Bend Tribune

"How weird. How refreshing . . . . Well, yes “Why Sturgis?” had some of the usual scenes of bikes riding through main street and the scantily dressed gals. What sets this movie apart from other Sturgis documentaries was the rest of the film, the history of the town itself—life in Sturgis the other 51 weeks of the year as well as a decent coverage of the other tourist attractions that bring 2 and 4 wheelers back to South Dakota time and time again."
--Thunder Press Magazine
