Solving social problems with a nudge
MacArthur winner Sendhil Mullainathan uses the lens of behavioral economics to study a tricky set of social problems -- those we know how to solve, but don't. We know how to reduce child deaths due to diarrhea, how to prevent diabetes-related blindness and how to implement solar-cell technology ... yet somehow, we don't or can't. Why?

Apparitions and Authorship

A while back, the Indy Social Media Breakfast crowd organized a Ghost Blogging Debate. Though the event was impressively well-attended and the presenters suitably well-spoken, those assembled expected more bloodsport. Righteousness and ardent realism should have collided on the topic of ghostwriting. A veritable cagematch should have ensued, with a ravenous crowd chanting ominously. Crack your knuckles and prepare for the brawl the audience yearned to see.

My Yearlong Philanthropy Quest: Month 2

We are a week into month 2 of my yearlong quest to highlight a different cause each month. Due to a wave of sickness followed by much catch-up work, I am a bit slow on getting started with my second cause. But before we get to that, lets recap month 1.

January: Charity:Water
Our fundraising efforts took a nose-dive in light of Haiti. However, two efforts we tried I would recommend to anyone as a way of supporting their favorite cause.

Your call to action should be a click

I get a lot of email promotions. Some are newsletters I have asked for, while some are spam from Indy Chamber members who have decided to subscribe me to their mailing lists against my will. In any case, one thing I notice about many of these email campaigns is that no matter how well-designed or appealing they are, they frequently miss the boat on the call to action.

For example, I of… Continue

Indiana represent on the television during Bowl 2010

You are probably bummed about the Colts loss..I know I am. Remember that the Colts can only get better. As in they did not have Bob Sanders for most of the season. What you might not have noticed is that Indiana was well represented..or “Indiana Represent”

Don’t forget Drew Brees went to Purdue. To my knowledge, he is the only Superbowl QB champion from a Indiana college.

Than we have the commercials. I counted 3 spots with natural born Hoosiers in them

So many people screaming "Content, Content, Content"

Do not get me wrong, I still value great content but the value is extremely low and is only going to go lower.

Many people are forgetting some basic economics, "Supply and Demand". With more and more people looking at producing "CONTENT" through video, blog post and pod cast we have to realize what is happening. More content is being produced than what is demanded. Supply goes up, demand(value) goes down!

So shouldContinue

Comedy in the Indianapolis Area

I had a rare treat the other night. On a Wednesday, in quiet little Wanamaker, at The Goldmine off of Southeastern (7628 Southeastern Ave, Indianapolis, IN 46239), I became aware of the Indy Standup Comedy scene.

The Food was great, the crowd was small (which I equate to friendly), and life was good.

And, this isn't the only place you can get a live dose of standup comedy. It turns out they have a fairly full calendar: http://www.Continue

Whose Your Legislator?

These were the words I heard on my second day at NAMI Indiana. And the answer was- I had no idea. I didn't believe that my voice or story mattered to lawmakers; I thought I was just another person, another address.

Little did I know the power of a person's story. Less than a year later I witnessed how one person voiced their concern to their representative and saw the impact it had. Legislators heard the issue and wanted to be educated. This ignited the passion I now have for policy change in I… Continue
